Creating Unique Effects With Cobalt Oxide Effect Pigments
Effect pigments consisting of platy substrates such as mica, borosilicate flakes or Al203 flakes, which have been encapsulated with magnetic forms of cobalt oxides and/or cobalt ferrites, can yield very unique three-dimensional effects when utilized in the presence of magnetic fields, electromagnetic and electrostatic radiation, and radio frequency signals.
For example, when platelets of muscovite mica having a average platelet size of about 17.8 mm (major dimension) which have been encapsulated with about 23% CoFe204 and about 3.5% Co304 were incorporated in an automotive paint system with a pigment to binder ratio of 0.2 and sprayed onto the Brady Chips (3x6 cm Aluminum panels) in the presence of a magnetic field, some very unique three dimensional effects were observed.
Different color effects can be obtained by incorporating coloring pigments in the formulation along with the magnetic pigment such as Carbon Black, Quinacridone Red, Phthalocyanine Blue and/or pearlescent/interference pigments with reflection colors such as gold, red, blue and green in the paint formulation.
Variations in the effects observed can be obtained by varying the strength of the magnetic field, or other electromagnetic interactions.
