Ceramic Crack Detection Using UV Light And Citrus Oil
Citrus oils are very fluorescent under black, i.e. ultraviolet (UV), light and produce non-toxic and safe waste byproducts. As such, they are useful for the inspection/detection of cracks in parts such as ceramic substrates and the like.
In one application, for example, ceramic substrates in production are dipped into orange oil (or other citrus peel squeezings), rinsed in isopropyl alcohol, and viewed under UV light. If any cracks are present, they will be observed where the alcohol has not adequately solvated the orange oil. Good parts can be further cleaned to remove trace oils.
