Method and apparatus for automatically getting the version information of one document by its publishing properties (29-Jul-2008)
Document has some properties about its publishing information, which can help to find the latest version of this document. The properties may include a URI where latest version of the document is. Or they may include a URI where can get some predefined standard services. The document edit/view application can read these properties and take proper action.When the document is opened by such application, the application will check, handle these properties and tell the user whether this document is the latest version.And it can provide additional functions, such as help user to get the latest version or handler the difference between versions.

With more and more use of internet, people can easily get the latest information from the internet. They can fill the latest e-form on the web to submit some request. They can review the latest document from internet. Meanwhile, offline documents are still widely used.
In some situation,
when people get a document, they need know whether this document is the latest version. If it isn
latest version of the document? For an example, my machine was broken. I need send the machine to the support center. Before that, I need send a request document with filled information and my manager's signature which show his approval to the support center. So I asked my colleague to give me the document. Fortunately, he found the document in hisPC and send to me. Then I opened the document by adocument application, filled the request document, printed it, got my manger's approval with his signature, and faxed the request to the support center. Unfortunately, the requestwas rejected by the support center because I used an old version request document. If the document has some property to indicate where can find the latest version of the document,
when I opened it by document application, the application may warn me that there are new version of this document.
There are lots of offline formal document, such as software requirement specification. It always has version information and always reminder the reader to get the latest version of the document from some place in its content. It is not convenient for the readerto check whether it is the latest version in some place. If the document application can help to do it or provide more function, such as showing version tree information, that may be cool.
