A lot of advanced research projects involve big computations which require a lot of computing power. Currently there are two ways used for executing big computations: the use of a grid of computers or supercomputers. Our invention proposes a third and easier way to run big calculations based on grid computing. For individuals IBM's world community grid and others like SETI@home are currently the way for individuals to use their own computing power for big mathematical computations like cancer research or for example the search for extraterrestrial life. Those solutions usually use the time when the computer of this person is in screensaver mode to calculate part of this big mathematical computation and require interested users to download and install a program. Our invention makes it much easier for users to aid computing power to those projects. This invention proposes a new way for individuals to provide causes they support with their computing power in an easier and less obtrusive manner, For companies and research institutes this is a third new and cheap way of getting their big calculations done.

Grid micro calculation

Owners of a website install a small program on their website. This will be visible on the website by a small text box on the website. A visitor of the website will see in this box either a question to participate in a certain research project with two buttons ("yes" or "no") or a status bar showing the progress of the calculation. If the calculation is done, a symbol is shown to confirm to the user the calculation is done.

From a server side. The moment a website is accessed by a user the program will check if the visitor has previously accepted to participate. If not the program will ask the question to participate as described above. If the user selects "no" nothing will happen. If the user selects "yes" or if the user has previously accepted to participate the following will happen:
A request will go from the server of the website to the grid-server. This grid-server will return a calculation. This calculation will be run on the computer of the user who accessed the website. If the calculation is finished the result will be send back to the grid-computer. The grid computer handles all the request from all the website that are accessed by users who are participating. The grid computer sends out calculations that are part of one big calculation. The grid server also combines all the received results into one result on the big calculation.
