In systems where cellulosic material is treated to produce C5 containing stream or prehydrolysate stream, liquid streams with the desired C5 containing product are produced at multiple locations in the process. These liquid streams are extracted from the process. At the point of extraction, solid cellulosic material becomes entrained with the C5 containing liquid and is also extracted. This solid cellulosic material is not desirable in the C5 storage tank. To remove the cellulosic solid material from the C5 containing stream, filters can be placed in the conduits or piping systems. These filters separate the solid cellulosic material and allow for it to be returned to the pretreatment system while allowing the C5 containing liquid to proceed to an intermediate storage tank or other process vessel or storage. The attached figure demonstrates this use of filters in a pretreatment system.
