A location-aware collaboration system and method which provides selective communication between users sharing a common digital asset is described. For example, once a digital document is send to multiple recipients, it's no longer protected from unauthorized use. A novel location aware collaboration protocol is disclosed. It provides the ability to dynamically change the protection attributes of digital documents after a target digital document is electronically distributed.

Location-Aware Collaboration

This system and method selectively executes a program embedded into an active digital document, tracks and grants scope-specific access to the target data or document using a location-aware policy. The following figures illustrates the key steps involved in implementing the capability to dynamically change protection attributes associated with the target active digital document while allowing a selective audience to access the multi-tier protected data. Each time the target active digital document is opened, a

validation

process embedded into the document is executed and the

protection

attributes are updated as appropriate.
