ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE
A system and method for locking content for playback on a client device is disclosed. The system comprises a communication module, a
token module and a refresh module. The communication module receives a lockdown input indicating a request to configure the client device to access only whitelist content included in a whitelist collection. The token module generates a persistent token for the client device based at least in part on the lockdown input. The refresh module receives a first set of whitelist content based at least in part on the whitelist collection.
SYSTEM FOR LOCKING CONENT
The specification relates to a data management system. In particular, the specification relates to a system and method for locking content
for playback on a client device. The sharing of assets (e.g., video content, audio content, etc.) on online services such as websites has developed into
a worldwide phenomenon, supported by hundreds of thousands of websites. Since the assets available on the asset hosting sites may include all kinds of content, a user may desire to restrict the accessible content to a specified group of assets under some circumstances. For example, a user that is a father may desire to restrict the video content that his 14-year-old son can access from a website so that only a specified group of videos are accessible by the son, and no other content is accessible. As another example, a user may want to restrict the accessible content from a website to be a specified collection of assets so that the content is appropriate for presenting in a public place such as a hotel lobby or a school, etc. Existing systems for restricting accessible content from a website have numerous problems. For example, existing systems may be able to access content organized in a playlist from an asset hosting site, but they fail to lock down a device that is used to access the content, allowing any user operating the device to access any unrestricted content from the asset hosting site at any time.
DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE PREFERRED EMBODIMENTS - System Overview
Figure 1A is a high-level block diagram illustrating a system 130 for locking content for playback according to one embodiment. The
illustrated embodiment of the system 130 includes an asset hosting site 100, a content provider 118 and a client 120. In one embodiment, the system 130 additionally includes a collection server 160. These entities of the system 130 are communicatively coupled via a network 122. Although only one content provider 118, one client 120 and one collection server 160 are illustrated, one skilled in the art will recognize that any number of content providers 118, clients 120 and collection servers 160 can be communicatively coupled to the network 122. Furthermore, while only one network 122 is coupled to the content provider 118, the client 120 and the collection server 160, one skilled in the art will appreciate that any number of networks 1...
