Semantic search is widely employed in areas such as image retrieval, gene and protein sequence matching, voice recognition, and document retrieval. Semantic search involves defining a metric space and mapping out relevant features in a domain of interest. Each object (such as a document) in the domain is then represented as a point in the feature space. Searching then becomes a matter of locating a point in a feature space corresponding to a query and looking for nearby objects.
