HD-Analyze Tip: Use Gradient Filters for sharper competitive analysis

Why we’re spotlighting this feature

We hear a consistent theme from customers doing competitive intelligence in InnovationQ+: you want the most efficient, reliable way to turn enormous data sets into accurate, actionable insights, without spending hours sifting through noise. That’s why we thought it might be helpful to spotlight a simple (but powerful) way to speed up your analysis: Gradient Filters in Hyper-Dynamic Analyze Mode (HD-Analyze).

In a few clicks, these filters help you answer two of the most common questions stakeholders ask:

  • “What’s actually most relevant to our topic?”
  • “Who’s moving right now—and where is the momentum?”

Quick Setup: Two Filters That Sharpen Your Analysis

In HD-Analyze, you’ll find two Gradient Filters—Publication Date and Relevance—that can quickly turn a large result set into a clear competitive readout.

  1. Start with the Relevance Gradient to cut the noise
Relevance helps you prioritize the documents most aligned to your exact thesis, so you can build a focused—and defensible—short list.
This is especially useful when competitors operate in neighboring spaces. The Relevance Gradient helps you confirm whether a portfolio is truly converging on your area of interest—or just overlapping at the edges.
  2. Layer in the Publication Date Gradient to spot momentum
Once you’ve isolated what matters, Publication Date helps you see the “now” view: who’s filing recently, where activity is heating up, and whether a competitor’s portfolio reflects current strategy or legacy work.

In practical terms, this is the difference between saying:

  • “Company X has a lot of patents.”
    vs.
  • “Company X increased filings over the last 18–24 months in this area—here’s where they’re heading.”

Best practice: your “competitive heat check”

If you only remember one workflow, make it this:

Relevance first (focus), then Publication Date (momentum). It’s a fast way to create a stakeholder-ready readout you can share with your team.

Quick checklist for your next analysis

  • Run your search and open HD-Analyze.
  • Apply Relevance Gradient to pull the most on-point documents to the top.
  • Apply Publication Date Gradient to highlight recent activity and momentum.
  • Capture your top 3–5 takeaways (who, what area, what time window) for a quick update to stakeholders.
